Frits Lampe exchanged his daily car kilometers for working from home and traveling with speed pedelec. One or two days a week he takes his lightning-fast bicycle with pedal assistance for the return trip from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, about 125 kilometers in total. It keeps him fit and vital: "It's just as fast as with the car, but more sustainable and gives me much more energy."
Before the corona pandemic, Frits Lampe made the daily drive from his hometown of Rotterdam to the head office of his work in Amsterdam. By car it took him at least 1.5 hours due to traffic jams. The delays caused him quite a bit of stress. During the working from home period he made his decision - supported by the new bike plan of his employer ABN Amro - to commute to work with a speed pedelec. “Since I work from home more often, I was able to change my travel pattern. The one or two times a week I go to Amsterdam, it could be done just as fast by bike. Especially one with pedal assistance.”
"Cycling gives me a mental boost, I am much more alert and happier. That already starts halfway, where all the farmers wish you a good morning."
In August of last year Frits made his first ride. He now knows his way through the Groene Hart (the green corridor between several large cities) so well that he is already at the office after 63 kilometers one way. “You make a shortcut. I'll be at the office in 1 hour and 40 minutes. It is really fast! On most stretches I can reach 45 km/h.” Frits notices that his working day starts more awake than ever. “Cycling gives me a mental boost. I am more alert. Happier. It already starts halfway: Farmers wave to you and wish you a good morning. I really love this trip.”
Frits makes his bike ride all year round, also in winter. With the proper gears, the elements are no challenge. The only challenge being wind. In cold weather and during a strong breeze, he makes the 'crossing' on one battery charge. “I have to focus on battery management. In the villages and towns I lower the speed slightly to save the battery. It is very sustainable and I think that is very important. On the long straights, I will power up. And I also have a public transport card, so if the weather is extremely bad, I can just take the train.
He notices that he also rides his bike more outside the commuting kilometers. All those bike rides make him fitter. “The groceries I used to do by car, I now do by bicycle. Fortunately, most of what I buy fits in the special bike bags.” He is also happy with the time saved by moving during the commute. “When I get home, I don't have to go to the gym anymore. In fact, cycling keeps me fit and really gives me a boost. I arrive full of energy!”
I always wanted to get from A to B as quickly as I could, preferably by car. Since I own this bike, I am using it a lot. I move more than ever before and I really pay attention to my surroundings.

A year ago I opted for an electric cargo bike. To my own surprise, I already covered 1,200 km with it. My 1.5 year old son is also a big fan!

I don't necessarily have to be the best or fastest on the racing bike. It's all about freedom to me. I love bike rides to the city of Elburg with my boyfriend and dog.
