Edwin de Voer describes himself as a sporty person. One that has never thought about riding an e-bike. “E-bikes are for old men”, was his strong opinion. Nevertheless, his wife – and a test drive – changed his mind. He now takes his Dutch ID Phantom out for almost every ride. “I always wanted to get from A to B as quickly as I could, preferably by car. Since I own this bike, I am using it a lot. I move more than ever before and I really pay attention to my surroundings."
Edwin is an avid runner. When he seldomly took his bike out for a ride, it was a solid Batavus dating back to 1977. “Just a basic model, nothing fancy.” The fact that his wife bought an electric bicycle was no reason for him to do so. He would rather just stomp a little harder on the pedals, even though that often resulted in 'clinging on', as he describes it. “A bicycle with a motor, that was something for old people in my opinion.”
"“I thought an e-bike was something for old men. But I have definitely changed my mind”"
Thanks to the bike plan his employer offered, Edwin is Corporate Account Manager Global Accounts at Konica Minolta, he ended up in the bike shop. He wanted a gravel bike, until the seller showed him the Dutch ID Phantom. An e-bike, not exactly what he was looking for. “After a test drive I was convinced. The seller praised the bike as the Land Rover among the electric bicycles and every single word was true. Its suspension fork and padded seat make it very comfortable and sporty to ride. And you even can go off-road.”
As a result of the strong motor, clinging is no longer Edwin’s reality. He takes the bike out more often. From his hometown of Soest, Edwin and his wife pedal with ease to Utrecht, 36 kilometers further on. He also uses the bike daily for trips close to home. Previously he would take the company car for that. “On the bike I have a lot more attention for my surroundings, for nature. It is wonderful to, for example, bike through the woods, my favorite trip.” Now that his youngest daughter has flown from the nest, there is considerably more time to cover extra kilometers. “Thanks to the electric motor, it feels like the wind is always pushing you in the back.”
The fact that Edwin revalues cycling (through nature) also has to do with a more difficult period in his life. At the start of the corona pandemic, he ended up in hospital with covid. He stayed in the intensive care unit for three weeks, after which he had to rehabilitate. “I had to relearn everything, even cycling. When you regain your balance on the bike for the first time, it really feels like something very special.”
A year ago I opted for an electric cargo bike. To my own surprise, I already covered 1,200 km with it. My 1.5 year old son is also a big fan!

I don't necessarily have to be the best or fastest on the racing bike. It's all about freedom to me. I love bike rides to the city of Elburg with my boyfriend and dog.

I exchanged my daily car kilometers for working from home and traveling with speed pedelec. One or two days a week I take my speed pedelec for the return trip from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, about 125 km in total.
